Self-Hypnosis: Key to Relaxation

Self-HypnosisSelf hypnosis, once learned, is a powerful skill which can last a lifetime. While there are numerous books, tapes and videos on the subject, one-on-one teaching from a qualified hypnotherapist is likely to produce the most effective results.

Hypnosis has been described as: a particular altered state of selective hypersuggestability brought about in an individual by the use of a combination of relaxation, fixation of attention, and suggestion. The techniques can be learned and self-applied to meet virtually any life need or purpose.

There are many levels of relaxation. Full consciousness involves normal intellectual activities of the conscious mind, and normal motor functions. Light relaxation may be recognized by slower breathing and pulse, daydreaming, imagined activity and dialogue etc. Moderate levels of relaxation are characterized by closed eyes, general loss of awareness of surroundings with increased receptivity of the senses and intensified imagery.

Deep levels of relaxation will reduce energy output and activity. Limpness or stiffness of appendages may be experienced together with heightened function of the creative process. Attention will narrow further and suggestibility will increase. Certain illusions of the senses may be noted.

Below these levels comes sleep, with suspension of voluntary movement and ahsence of conscious thought.

Uses of self-hypnosis include self-anaesthesia (controlling pain in dentistry), reducing insomnia, control of some organic functions (blood flow and pressure), some regression, increased abilities in concentration, learning and memory.

Develop Motivation

Motivation

In many instances, a person apparently lacking in motivation will be found also to be suffering from low self-esteem. In such cases, first attention should go to improvement of the self-image. It is difficult to fire up ambitions if you see yourself as a total failure. Fortunately difficulties involving both self-esteem and motivation respond rapidly through hypnosis. Simply recognizing that you need help proves that you are capable of motivation – it represents the first step.

There are five areas in which people are motivated: 1. Physiological (the need for food, sleep, sex); 2.Safety (need for protection, job advancement etc.); 3. Belongingness/Love (family, social contact); 4.Achievement (need to grow, use potential); 5. Esteem (need to be valued by others and have self-respect).

Developing motivation involves eliminating fear of failure and establishment of goals. Goals set a sequence and provide an order for progress. They also permit a most important factor: a sense of completion. It is vital to know that the work being done will have an end. For this reason, a step by step process in which a series of small goals can be achieved and completed is a key to success in increasing motivation.

Also important is the process of defining what “success” means to the specific individual. Success means different things to different people. Accumulation of money is often low in a ranking of priorities. Peace, love, freedom, achievement of ambitions, developing talents and skills may be measures of success. Hypnosis can increase motivation, which can lead to the type of success that achieves fulfillment.

Be In Control

self-confidenceHuman beings begin identification processes early in life. Genes can carry physical characteristics, but various character assets and liabilities can he acquired through associations and environments – – we learn from the way we live. Virtually anyone who harbors deep feelings of inferiority is a negative thinker. The characteristic probably started early in life. Being able to think and act positively is perhaps the most important factor in success. Positive attitudes can be generated through hypnosis.

Characteristics which are not hereditary usually come from childhood conditioning. Lack of confidence comes from fear of failure. Fear of failure can generate the devastating fear of success. Since you cannot fail if you do not try, it is both natural and easy to become apathetic, and determined not to try. Success is avoided since success could lead to further challenges and expectations, virtually assuring future failure.

Self-hypnosis can be learned, and is valuable in correcting and limiting the negative thinking that causes dependence and avoidance of control of ones own life and destiny. It produces relaxation, which in turn can relieve or modify tension. Hypnosis, through regression, can uncover the causes of the character liabilities which work against control. Is the liability inherited or acquired? Breaking of undesirable identifications is a matter of first recognizing that they exist, then using the powerful suggestion – either through a hypotherapist or by means of self-hypnosis – to create the new you -a person with confidence, motivation, ability and desire for control.

Self Esteem

DEVELOP SELF-ESTEEM & SELF CONFIDENCE THROUGH HYPNOSIS

confidentSelf-esteem and self-confidence are not the same. Yet it would be very difficult to have one without the other. Both are critical elements in the human effort to achieve success, happiness and fulfillment in life. Self-esteem is a fundamental influence affecting virtually every area of life – friendships, work, love relationships, ambition and goals, even health itself. Self-confidence is necessary to achievement, but without self-esteem, self-confidence cannot exist. Development of self-esteem and subsequently self-confidence are ideal projects for hypnotism. But as in many areas, lasting benefits may require determination of the causes for the absence of a client’s good self-image. Among major causes must be included past negative programming from our environment.

Many parents, and teachers as well as relatives, cannot imagine the damage that can be done to a child “labeling”, such as repeatedly commenting: “You’re the laziest kid in town”, or “You are stupid – why can’t you be smart like your brother.” Such labels are easily buried and forgotten by the conscious mind. But the subconscious mind remembers, and retains the statements of such authority figures.

Fear of failure often results. Equally or even more devastating can be the related fear of success. Through hypnosis self-acceptance can be developed, along with self-confidence and a positive change in perspective. Past negative programming can be eliminated by becoming conscious of the false negative beliefs and countering them. What we can become conscious of we can change. Hypnosis is a means of becoming conscious of those hidden road blocks to success and removing them forever.

Athletic Performance

HYPNOSIS: POWERFUL HELP IN ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE

In 1932 studies in electrophysiology demonstrated that by imagining a physical activity, the muscles involved are stimulated. Further research in l976 indicated that actual neural growth occurs as a result of mental imagery. In 1980 tests of world class Soviet athletes showed that mental training was far more productive of improvement than physical training.

Hypnosis cannot make unskilled people into champions, but it can generate performance at or near personal peak levels.

golf1Effective hypnosis to improve athletic performance can be broken down into four categories: goal setting, relaxation, concentration and rehearsal. Athletes with coaches or therapists need to write down improvement goals and time expectations pertinent to achievement. Next, since tension is counterproductive to performance, relaxation is needed and forms the base to build concentration and rehearsal and release anxiety.

Concentration is a means of eliminating distractions. The use of post-hypnotic cues is highly effective. Focus will be on the specific task which leads to optimal performance. Finally, it has been proved that mental rehearsing of performance can be more productive than physical practice. Jack Nicklaus has related that he never hit a ball without first visualizing it landing exactly where he wants it. There are two types of rehearsal imagery: process imagery (the steps taken to achieve a specific task), and result imagery (the visualization of the completion of a perfect effort). Mental hypnotic processes do not remove the need for training and practice, but can maximize the productive results.

Career Enhancement

JOB PERFORMANCE IMPROVED THROUGH HYPNOTHERAPY

Job performance, and related career advancement, certainly can be improved and expedited through hypnotherapy. Because a program must, of necessity, have many facets, the task is likely to be complex. Therapy can involve relaxation, learning, self-esteem and self-confidence, motivation, attitude modification, organizational planning, time management, inter personal relationships, sales techniques and other elements.

The hypnotherapist must determine which areas show serious deficiencies. Self-confidence, of course, is all important. If you believe you can do better, you will do better. To achieve success in utilizing hypnosis, concentration is essential. It has been said that genius is the result of the ability to superconcentrate – to use more mind-power than the small fraction used by humans in their daily lives. We cannot read, talk, watch television and listen to others effectively all at the same time. We need to concentrate – to be able to focus our thinking and attention on the matter at hand to achieve the best results.

In the process of removing obstacles and enhancing strengths the hypnotherapist will teach a client self-hypnosis, which will enable him to focus attention-power on his job or the specific task at hand, improving performance, gaining recognition and earning advancement.

William James originated the concept of “ideomotor action”, which holds that whenever attention is concentrated long enough on a thought or idea, it results in physical action. James wrote: “We can alter our lives by altering our attitudes of mind.”

Effective Sales

POWER SALES TECHNIQUES ENHANCED BY HYPNOTHERAPY

The highest paid profession in the world is that of the salesman. The rewards are limited only by the individual who selects sales as a career. Advanced education is not a requirement. A person who can sell will never be without a job. So what are the requirements? They are few, but vital.

First is self-esteem. A salesperson must think highly of himself/herself, for without self-esteem the necessary self-confidence will not develop. Following self-confidence we must add motivation. All of the above can be developed or strengthened through hypnosis, which can deal with the restrictions imposed by self-consciousness or feelings of inferiority.

The successful sales person must be in control of his own life and mind – be a self-starter. There will be little supervision or direction. The salesperson must decide what needs to be done and when, what special knowledge and skills are required to market a product or service, and must schedule the time necessary to accomplish what needs to be done.

Goal-setting abilities are of the utmost importance. Goals need to be set in achievable increments. An ongoing series of smaller ohjectives which can he achieved in relatively short order provides a needed sense of completion and a realization of success. Goal-setting and Achievement Programs are important elements in hypnotherapy practice.

The sales profession is one where the importance of Attitude Control cannot be overemphasized. Salespeople get rejected, sometimes frequently. Techniques for maintaining positive attitudes are additional benefits available through hypnosis.

Meditation and Self-Hypnosis

MEDITATION AND SELF-HYPNOSIS ARE SYNERGISTIC

Call it “New Age thinking”. Call it wisdom of the ancients”. Whatever the name, Meditation and its powerful impacts have captured the attention of the world. It can be found in books, videos, lectures, movie productions, seminars, schools and homes.

Webster defines Meditation as “continued or extended thought; reflection; contemplation.” Many gurus of Meditation consider it as a process of freeing the mind of the normal clutter and allowing creative thoughts and visualizations to flow in. Many practitioners of Meditation follow procedures akin to those of self-hypnosis to achieve the relaxation necessary for effective mental receptivity.

A person trained and skilled in self hypnosis can use such abilities to add power to meditation. Perhaps even more significant is that with the use of self hypnosis, meditation can be directed as to purpose and desired results. Transpersonal Hypnotherapy utilizes a blending of hypnosis and creative visualization in the process of accessing one’s highest self – which involves establishing communication with our own instincts and intuitions. This can result in powerful experiences.

Shakti Gawain has written brilliantly and beautifully about Meditation and Creative Visualization and the power of the mind. A knowledge of self-hypnosis, professionally taught by a competent hypnotherapist, can add pleasure, meaning and understanding to her books and those of other authors dealing with such subjects. A knowledge of hypnosis can prove a powerful tool in the hands of a New Age thinker. Hypnosis and Meditation work well together. They are truly synergistic.

Stress

HYPNOTHERAPY IMPORTANT IN STRESS MANAGMENT

stressed-out-smAll stress is not bad stress. A pleasant romantic encounter, the anticipation of a happy event or reward – such things can produce stress yet still be beneficial. Stress that begins to debilitate or produce depression, however, requires changing.

There are cases in which a situation causing stress cannot be changed. Effective hypnotherapy can change the reaction to or perception of it, achieving management of the stressful factors, permitting life that is enjoyable and productive.

Stress inclinations can be inherited. Children tend to adopt the reactions they witness in their parents. A hypnotherapist seeking causes of stress may find regression advisable. Type A personalities – overachievers, workaholics, highly competitive, quick-to anger types often experiences stress. Hostility and cynicism factors make this group susceptible.

Repression of or refusal to accept feelings (hurt, anger, grief, or other emotions) can produce stress, as can exposure to stimuli which tax physical, mental or emotional capacities beyond their manageable limits. Other stress producers include dietary deficiencies and, for females, PMS. Stress management hypnotherapy is most effective in individual sessions. Each session needs to be tailored to specific, individual needs subsequent to determination of causes. Hypnotherapy can reprogram the subconscious mind to develop and act on new responses to old stimuli. Severe stress and depression may call for special counselling or medical evaluation. It should be kept in mind that if emotions are not given relief from stress sooner or later the body will react.

Relationships

HYPNOTHERAPY IN RELATIONSHIPS CAN SOLVE MANY PROBLEMS

arguingThe adage “Opposites Attract” has been stated for eons. Nowhere is it more evident than in hypnotherapeutic counseling. Humans possess different types of suggestibility and sexuality. They are drawn to those whose characteristics are opposite from their own, yet in acts and communication they tend to expect a partner or associate to have the same reaction response to words, acts or situations. This is the source of many if not most relationship problems.

Three major conflicts derive from these personality imbalances and involve difficulties in areas of sex, finance and communication. Partners (within families or businesses) cannot understand why their points of view go unrecognized or unappreciated, never realizing the viewpoints of associates are opposites.

Hypnosis can point out and explain the differences between people so that with understanding, friction can be reduced. In special cases, through hypnotherapy, it is possible even to alter the nature of subjects to effect a desired goal.

live-in-relationshipIn many cases individuals, through reaction to the demands of life, through advancing in years or for other reasons, may tend to withdraw and remove themselves from life’s mainstream. They may drop friendships, avoid social contacts and isolate themselves, which can be detri- mental to body and mind. Through hypnotherapy such people can relearn to enjoy old friends, meet new ones, regain feelings of self-worth and accept themselves as interesting people ready to begin new activities.
